The part of the tooth that is visible in the mouth is called crown, and the remaining part that extends into the jawbones is called the root. Hard tissues of the tooth crown are the enamel which covers the crown of the tooth and the dentin just under the enamel. The root of the tooth is covered by cementum and dentin under the cementum. This hard tissue complex surrounds a cavity which contains connective tissue. This space is called pulp cavity (root canal space), and the connective tissue containing blood vessels and nerves in it is called the pulp. Pulp is the tissue which gives the vitality to the tooth, and is responsible for the development, nourishment and defense of the tooth from the birth.
Endodontics is a scientific discipline and a dental speciality which deals with the diseases and treatments of the pulp and periapical tissues surrounding the root of the tooth including the diagnostic and therapeutic endodontic procedures and researches to prevent these diseases. Untreated deep decays in the mouth, repeated decays under previous fillings or crowns and bridges, mechanical and thermal trauma to the tooth regardless of a tooh decay may cause the vital pulp tissue get inflamed or even infected. In this case, root canal treatment must be performed. The purpose of the root canal treatment is removing inflamed/infected pulp tissue with the help of root canal instruments and irrigating solutions; instrumenting and shaping the root canal appropriately, disinfecting the canal space, and obturating the root canal entirely with biocampatible root canal filling materials.
